Garmin Catalyst - Lap Timer/Driving Coach
The Garmin Catalyst is an industry-first racing coach and driving performance optimizer that's changing the world of Motorsports. It mounts in the cockpit to gather your performance data and provide real-time audible coaching. Immediate session analysis helps drivers of all levels achieve their full track driving potential on road courses. Groundbreaking True-Track Positioningu2122 technology uses built-in accelerometers, 10 Hz multi-GNSS positioning, and video image processing to automatically generate your car's racing line on the track. Plus, their revolutionary True Optimal Lapu2122 technology shows your best achievable time, based on lines you actually drove and can repeat. While on the track, hear real-time coaching cues through a compatible headset2 or car stereo. After your session, use the 7" wide touchscreen display to immediately review your performance data and see your major areas for improvement.
Digging Deeper
This is a standalone unit, no laptop is required for data analysis or anything. Everything is done on the device and it is easy to simply mount and drive.
Linked via Bluetooth or cable connected to a 3.5mm headphone jack, the system will provide audible basic and advanced session goals. It uses its forward-facing camera and combines with GPS information to understand your actual lateral position on track, which makes it unique. This ability allows it to be able to see and then suggest what the best line is. Track maps are not pre-installed on the device, only the start-finish lines are. Everything in terms of track recreation/line through corners etc. is created dynamically on the device. It takes about 3 laps your first session for it to learn the track, then you will begin getting lap times and feedback.
The system takes into account your best lines through every corner and sector, sewing together your perfect lap based on previous laps you've driven. Additionally, it can promote lap consistency, which equates to faster laps times as you begin to fine-tune each corner or sector.
It gathers several data metrics and identifies where laps can be seamlessly joined together to create the fastest racing line. This shows users their fastest possible time based on lines actually driven and gives them an optimal lap they can truly achieve. This differs from "theoretically best" times you see on many other devices as it accounts for all sectors and segments. For example, if you go too fast through one corner and sacrifice the next, that would not yield the fastest lap as some theoretical times would otherwise suggest.
Another key feature worth mentioning is the system can prioritize up to 3 opportunities, or areas on the track that are most valuable to focus on, and provides comparative data to show you what you may have done better and what you could have done better on your quickest lap.
